This publication is for individuals who are not married or in a spousal relationship, but who are - or are about to become - parents. Single parents who have not been married or in a spousal relationship may have different questions and concerns than someone who has been. For answers to questions asked by parents who have been married, or in a spousal relationship, and are separating, see PLEA’s publication When Couples Separate.

Each person’s situation is unique. Some face single parenthood alone. Others have support from their parents, the baby’s other parent, friends or relatives. The information in this booklet applies to both single mothers and single fathers, and may provide useful information for non-custodial parents as well.
