Family Violence Intermediary Training Guide

Last Updated: March 30, 2007

Legal Information About Recognizing and Responding to Family Violence

Individuals experiencing family violence have many questions and concerns: how to find help; how to care for children at a time of crisis; how to find financial resources and work out financial problems. This guide describes the law surrounding family violence while maintaining awareness of these practical issues.

The term "family violence" includes many different forms of abuse and neglect that adults and children may experience within their families: violence between spouses and violence towards children as well as violence towards siblings and older members of the family unit, such as grandparents. The guide focuses, however, on spousal abuse.

This guide is not intended to prepare you to provide legal advice. The guide will, however, provide intermediaries with the background knowledge, resources, and skills they will need to assist others with problems requiring legal information.
