Purchases do not always live up to our expectations. Maybe the item is not what you were led to believe based on the description or maybe it is defective or breaks down after only a few uses. In Saskatchewan consumers are protected by basic warranties in consumer protection legislation. Consumers may have additional protection because the manufacturer or the seller has made verbal or written promises, or provided an additional warranty. As a consumer, understanding the law around warranties can help you know what to do when a purchase goes wrong and help ensure that the seller or manufacturer of the item lives up to their legal obligations regarding repair and replacement.
When you purchase consumer goods in Saskatchewan you are protected by some basic warranties. These include things like the goods fitting any description of them given by a seller or manufacturer and the goods being reasonably durable. Manufacturers and sellers cannot exclude any of these warranties.
Often manufacturers and sellers make statements about their products to encourage you to buy them. Sometimes these statements are considered an express warranty about the product. If a seller or manufacturer gives you an express warranty about a product it must live up to these statements. However, to qualify as an express warranty the statement must be something that would induce a reasonable person to buy the product.
