  • Determine whether the deceased individual was an organ or tissue donor
  • Obtain Medical Certificate of DeathContact a Funeral Home or Crematorium or other individual who will take charge of the body
  • Notify relatives and friends
  • Make arrangements for dependants and pets
  • Secure physical property
  • Locate Will
  • Determine whether the individual has pre-planned or pre-paid for funeral services or interment
  • Decide whether to place an obituary in the local paper or online service
  • Determine whether there is a life insurance policy in place and next steps
  • Order a Death Certificate
  • Contact Service Canada for information about cancelling CPP and OAS benefits and personal identification documents such SIN and passports, looking into survivor and death benefits, and filing final income tax returns
  • Contact financial institutions and cancel credit cards
  • Cancel subscription services
